Poonul, worn after the Upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony), is a holy thread traditionally worn by men. It symbolizes purity, knowledge, and spiritual awakening.
Yagnopavit (sacred thread) — a term derived from “Yadna” and “Upavit” — is made of nine sacred fibers. Each of these fibers represents divine forces of the universe:
- Omkar – The sacred sound of creation
- Agni – Fire
- Nag – Serpent
- Som – Moon
- Pitar – Ancestors
- Prajapati – Deity of procreation
- Vayu – Air
- Yama – Deity of death
- Vishvadevata – Deity of the universe
These nine fibers are twisted into three strands, symbolizing the Rigveda, Yajurveda, and Samaveda. The three strands are tied together in a knot called the Brahmagatha (“gatha” meaning knot), which represents the Atharvaveda.
It is believed that by wearing the Poonul, one attains wisdom, clarity, and the radiance of the Sun. The positive spiritual energy spreads throughout the body, purifying mind and soul. The Upanayanam ceremony marks a sacred beginning, offering protection from negative forces and guiding the wearer toward spiritual growth.
